Je viens de Tournai, qui est une jolie petite ville en Belgique, juste à la frontière avec la France (la grande ville la plus proche est la ville de Lille, en France, à 15 kilomètres)... Et Bruxelles n'est pas loin, car la Belgique est un petit pays et tout est proche l'un de l'autre!!!
Petite question pour frenchpoddy01, tu viens d'où au Bélize? Belmopan?

Je suis... ok, I assume a Pole will not be a 'Polonaine' but something like 'Polonaise', right? (Oh, the pain of learning a language from scratch!). So:
Je viens de Varsovie.
Will a boyfriend also be a 'cupine'? Probably not...
ericat says
May 12, 2008
oolung,
you're right, the word for Polish is 'polonaise,' if you are a woman. If you are a man, you say 'polonais' (the 's' is silent).
the word for boyfriend is 'copain'. You can find it in the vocabulary section as a supplementary word if you want to hear how it is pronounced.
oolung says
May 12, 2008
Merci beaucoup, Ericat! (cramming the phrase "Je sois polonaise, je sois polonaise, je sois...' AND trying to get the 'r' sound right).
As for the pronounciation of 'copain'... I just have to open my (sadly empty) piggybank, get a premium subscription, and I'll be back and all over here in no time! Proudly getting the pronounciation of cupine and copain raight! :D

Salut les amis de Frenchpod! I've been waiting anxiously for your podcast to begin and from what I've seen and heard so far, I love it!
Je suis americaine et je viens de l'état de Wisconsin.
But I have a question for you, Amaury -- In the dialogue, when the speaker says "Je suis americaine", I hear a liaison between the final "s" of "suis" and the initial "a" of "americaine", but I don't hear it when you are repeating the line. So is this because you are speaking slowly or is it an individual variant or am I just not hearing what you're saying very well?
Merci!

Glad to see you on FrenchPod!
The region around Toulouse is beautiful so we hope you'll have a great time over there (may I ask where is the wedding exactly?). It's quite hot in July as well.
To come back to French, you need to say : "Je suis américain" because you're a man.

May 12, 2008
Salut Anna8,

You heard it right! You're supposed to make the liaison as in the dialogue. I didn't make the liaison in the translation because I was repeating the words more slowly.

Congratulation on the first lesson.
Wouldn't it be difficult for people who never know french to start with a lesson like this?
Can we have grammar explanation in the PDF?
I understand Praxis method work well for Chinese, but I am quite critical if it can work for French and Spanish. Chinese don't really has much grammar compare to French or Spanish.
I have been using Spanishpod for a while, the biggest downside is I find it difficult to get into the next level, for me, I have no knowledge of Spanish when I started learning, I have no clue about its grammar, I finished all 30 newbie lessons without much trouble, however, I bump into difficulty when I started listening to elementary lessons, the biggest issue is I don't understand the grammar behind those sentences, making it difficult for me to retain the information I learned in that lesson.
I hope Frenchpod, and may be Spanishpod can consider adding grammar points in the PDF, I really wish to learn the grammar of these 2 languages. Thanks.

Amaury,
Thanks for the tip, I wouldn't have realized that. The name of the town we are going to is Aurignac. We actually met the French couple in China, they live in Shanghai now. I did spend a week in Paris once but this trip will be much more meaningful, as I didn't even meet any French people the first time, and this is in fact the first wedding I will ever have gone to, French or otherwise.

Salut à tous, et bienvenue Frenchpod. Je suis américain, et je viens de la ville de Los Angeles. Je attend les leçons intermediates et avançées avec beaucoup de anticipation.
I learned French from Quebec radio and magazines. Interesting note to this lesson, in Quebec they say "ma blonde" for girlfriend (regardless of hair color) and "mon chum" for boyfriend.
An excellent online lookup source for French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese is wordreference.com. You can find almost any variation of any word you come across, and then they have links to forum discussions about the usage of those words.

Those are valid concerns, pituitaryadenoma. We are traditionally taught that studying grammar is the essential element in learning a language, the starting point and ending point to all French learning endeavors. Maybe this is partly because many of the institutions where foreign languages have traditionally been taught focus very heavily on reading and writing, due to the nature and requirements of the environment where the language is being taught (example, large classrooms, evaluation tests, etc.)
There is nothing wrong with learning grammar. If a person's goal is to do some scholarly writing in the language than it will definitely come in pretty handy, that's for sure. It really depends on your own personal learning goals.
If your goal is to chat freely with a French-speaking person and eventually process the words you might hear around you in the Parisian métro with ease, or in today's case, learn how to ask someone which state they are from, then listening to FrenchPod daily (or as often as you can) will give you the skills you need to do that and your mind enough exposure to the French words and correct structure it needs to intuitively process grammar on its own, just as it did when we learned our own native languages.
The best thing to do at this stage is to feed your brain with French by listening frequently to the newbie podcasts, doing the exercises of the lessons when you have the time, and then allowing your mind to retain what it wants. When you feel like you want to move on to the next level, try the elementaries and if you feel any frustration or discomfort, just let us know and we will guide you through it.
JP and the rest of the SpanishPod team are fantastic teachers (I know this firsthand because they've been teaching me and the rest of the FrenchPod team for a long time!), so just let them know any troubles you might be experiencing and they will help you.

Total French newbie here!! I have been a regular listener to Chinese pod, but I began with a good foundation in Chinese. I am nervous and intimidated really to begin a language ike French where I know absolutely zero about the pronunciation, grammar, or anything.
I have been dying to learn French for some time, so I was so excited to see this podcast! But even this newbie lesson was over my head until I could look at what I was hearing. Do try to keep in mind that some of us are completely ignorant of even the most obvious things.
Thanks! is it merci?
ericat says
May 17, 2008
First, I commend you, spinkjk and all of the other French newbies who are coming to FrenchPod with no prior exposure to the language! It takes courage to start studying a new language when you aren't familiar with the sounds or any of the words and it often is a little overwhelming and intimidating at first. I've gone through those feelings every time I've started learning a new language in the very beginning. But I can promise you that it will go away very soon and you will become more and more comfortable with French as you go along.
If you're approaching French with absolutely no knowledge of it, then you probably won't retain everything you hear in the podcasts at first. Even if you only took away how to say "je suis américaine" from this lesson, then you've made progress and you're right where you're supposed to be at this stage. You'll find that as you listen to more and more lessons, you will retain a few more words and phrases each time and it will become easier and less intimidating as you go along.
It sounds, spinkjk, like you're a visual learner - me, too! I usually need to see things written down to be able to retain and process them. Exploring the tabs on the lesson page (dialogue, vocabulary, and expansion) is very helpful to visual learners to get the most out of the lesson. Looking at the dialogue written down can help visual learners feel a little more comfortable when they listen to the podcast. You might try experimenting over the next few lessons by looking at the dialogue before, during or after the podcast to find which one works the best for you.
I hope that helps. Bonne chance!

Salut, tout le monde. Hello, everybody.
Je suis américain et je vis pas loin de Washington, DC. (It's great living not far from Washington DC -- except for the traffic.)
My own level of ability in French is what's technically known as "fair to middling." I'm looking forward to seeing intermediate and advanced material.
I work in the training/learning field, so I'd like to reassure people who are new to French that yes, you can and you will learn French effectively here. You don't recall how perplexing it was to learn your native language; we embed not only the vocabularly but the structure and the rhythm. For a second (or third) language that we learn once we're adults, we're more aware of the process, so it feels strange and we feel at turns frustrated and awkward.
Remember that when you're working to figure things out, you're actually building new connections and even new cells in the brain. (And you thought you were just listening to La Vie en Rose.)

Even if it's not to learn, I'm drawn by the entertaining conversations btwn Ericat et Amaury.
I do have une question: Is there a situation when you don't voice a liason. I'm not talking about the difference because slow'd speech vs fast speech, as in anna8's question above. I'm talking about in a regular conversational speed. I only ask because in the vocab section "Tu as une copine?" I was expecting to hear "Tu a-Zune copine" but didn't.

Everything I've learned says that copain/copine is for a true boyfriend or girlfriend (someone you are dating).

Rallyant, courage! It is very normal when you are first starting out to feel the way that you do. I know I experienced it! But it soon will pass.
The most important thing is to not try so hard to understand every single thing at this stage. You are not expected right now to remember, retain, master, and be able to repeat perfectly everything that you will learn in these newbie lessons after the first time. In fact, you might forget a lot of it and that's OK. Most of the content in Newbie lessons are very high frequency words and expressions that you will hear over and over, so you will have many more opportunities to learn the words and expressions in this and other Newbie lessons. And you will probably find that the next time around, the word will click very quickly because you have already heard it once before.
So keep your chin up and stick with it! Bonne chance!

Bonjour Serge,
Nice to meet you! Yes, I agree, French is really a special language! Very smooth and it just sounds really elegant. I am still learning though. I kind of understand maybe only half of what you said :)
I think you asked if I learned French at school? No, I did not know any French at all before listening to FrenchPod, actually. I have some co-workers who are French and sometimes I practice what I learned at FrenchPod by speaking to them in French and seeing if they understand what I said.
Here in California people usually take Spanish as their second language at school. But in the Northeastern states of the US (the ones that are near Canada), I think they do study French as a second language.
I also think you told me that you live in Paris, right. I would love to go to Paris one day, but with the exchange rates nowadays and the gas prices, it's probably gonna take a while. I have to save some "argent" first.
Meanwhile, I can hone my French language skills by listening regularly to Erica and Amaury :)
Great to have you here to help us out mon ami.

By the way, Erica is one of those wonderful Northeastern French speaking people you're talking about: she's from Michigan!
You said people in California usually prefer to learn Spanish first, and this is quite understandable. But I can assure you that it's reciprocal: this summer in Paris I came across a girl from Mexico City who spoke English just like any American! I wish we were all that fluent in English here in France...

Quoi? Comment? Tu habites la Silicon Valley? C'est très prestigieux tu sais... Moi je suis dans le vingtième arrondissement. Il est connu pour le cimetière du Père-Lachaise, où est enterré Jim Morrison notamment...
Le centre-ville, j'y travaille mais je n'y habite pas car c'est beaucoup trop cher pour moi. D'ailleurs je suis dans l'informatique comme toi: c'est drôle, non? Je fais du développement web en PHP.
A+

Hello Serge!
Sorry for not being able to reply back to you quickly.
Thanks for correcting my French. I really appreciate the help! :)
I do not really understand half of what you said actually, especially about the Jim Morrison thing. I had to search him up to figure out what you were saying. Hahah! But I hope to keep on improving my French and sometime soon I should be able to understand French at that level :)
I also think you said that you do not live in le centre-ville because it is expensive. Yeah, I can feel that too. It is the same here in the States too, especially around here in the Silicon Valley area.
It's nice to hear that we are actually in the same line of work. I used to do a lot of server side work like you do, but I have not worked on PHP. Mostly Perl and C#. Right now am I doing a lot of client-side work as well using JavaScript.
Hope to hear from you soon!
Salut!

Hi Alan!
Thanks for replying. I write in the Newbie lessons because I'm not subscribed, as I don't need to learn French at this level. However I really enjoy to hear about it in English and it's a good exercise for me to try to understand everything that Erica says!
I know you may not always understand written French, but you're probably aware of online translation tools like http://www.reverso.net, are you? (that's the one I use when I'm not sure about the meaning of a text in English...)
You seem to have a great motivation for learning, so I'm sure you'll soon reach a correct level for holding basic conversations with natives! We're very tolerant about mistakes and accents from foreigners. There are lots of different accents in France and in other French speaking countries - Hi Amaury! And I only hope Erica never gets rid completely of her so lovely American accent!
I enjoy The Doors very much, hence the reference to Jim Morrison. Of course I'm proud he chose Paris to end his life, but I'd have so much preferred him to live longer! Tragic destiny... but what a voice!
See you...

Bonjour, sglanis,
One of the great things about this method is these little words will be coming up all the time throughout the dialogues, so it will really be able to help you grasp them more easily being able to hear them in different, real contexts.
Cela and ceci though are found more in the upper intermediate lessons, as they are a more "sophistiqué" French, as Amaury would say.
Bonne chance with your French studies!

amaurylibeer says
June 2, 2009
Exactly David, you can say 'Je viens de Wiltshire et j'habite dans un petit village, à quinze minutes de Stonehenge.'
"J'habite" is the correct form as "je" becomes "j' " in front of most of the verbs that start with a "h". e.g. : j'hésite (I hesitate).
You need to add the word 'à' in front of 'quinze minutes' as it's the expression '...être (which is not required, like in your example) à + time or distance from...' e.g. : La ville de Lille est à deux heures de Paris. Londres est à 490 kilomètres de Paris. Londres est à 2 heures en train de Paris. J'habite à Londres, à 490 kilomètres de Paris. J'habite à Londres, à 2 heures en train de Paris.

November 13, 2009
Oui, gansenbon, Shanghai est une très grande ville.
Alors 'How do you like it?' would be in French 'Comment tu t'y sens?' or 'Comment trouves-tu la vie à Shanghai?'
Comment je trouve la vie à Shanghai? Quand je suis arrivé ici, j'étais comme perdu car c'était la première fois que je venais en Asie. Il m'a fallu six mois pour m'y faire! (How do I like it? When I arrived here, I felt like I was lost as it was the first time for me in Asia. It took me six months to get used to it!)
Maintenant, je m'y sens beaucoup mieux car j'aime beaucoup le rythme fou de cette ville (now, I feel much better as I like the crazy pace of this city).

"Je suis égyptien. J'habite à Alexandrie." is right samiziko.
In front of the name of cities, you need to use the structure 'habiter à'. e.g. "J'habite à Paris." / "Il habite à Tokyo." / "Vous habitez à Sydney." / ...
There are exceptions like "J'habite au Caire." because the name in French of this city is 'Le Caire'. Another example is : "Il habite au Cap, en Afrique du Sud". The name in French of this city is 'Le Cap'.

Je suis americaine et j’habite a San Jose (Silicon Valley), California, pres de notre ville tres charmante, San Francisco. Je suis une liberale politiquement et socialement. Donc California est un etat certainement pour moi.
California is a beautiful and friendly state with an interesting cultural diversity, a perfect temperature, lots of good food of different ethnic groups, super talents from all over the world, countless parks, open spaces and beaches, etc, etc. People can have outdoor activities all year round. I can go hiking every weekend without weather restriction, I can ski and surf on one day. I love California but for some reason, I left my heart in Paris since I visited it.
“…or an American who just wants to pretend like you're Canadian or Australian when you're not in the mood for a lecture on US foreign policy.” This cracked me up! I can’t pretend to be someone I’m not. A good discussion is good for the soul. I welcome that.

In Word 2007 (not sure about earlier versions) type
ctrl + ' + (vowel) to get á, é, í, ó, ú
(the ' is next to Enter - on the say key as " )
ctrl + ` + (vowel) to get à, è, ì, ò, ù
(the ` is below the esc key, on the say key as ~ )
You don't need to press all three keys together. If you want à, hit the the ctrl and ` keys together, then release. Then hit a.

D'accord, Amaury. Un bon week-end a toi aussi! (A weird feeling when I write this "week-end" as a French word. Hehe ...)

C'est la même chose pour moi quand j'écris le mot "weekend" en anglais Jolyn : ))
Alors comment s'est passée la réunion?

It would be super awesome if there was a grammar section attached to the early Newbie lessons, with an introduction to conjugation etc. I know this can also be found in the grammar section, but it makes sense to also have it paired to the dialogues. Maybe links with suggested grammar to review?
